Learn how to spot a rip current
Most beachgoers don’t know how to spot a rip current.
This is the critical beach safety fact that our production team was able to uncover when producing the television documentaries.
In our documentary Rip Current Heroes, Professor Rob Brander explained the key visual indicators of an operating rip current.
Look for dark gaps
One of best ways to spot a rip is to look for dark gaps between the breaking waves – almost like a path going through the water – where the water is deeper and darker in colour. Other signs can be a choppy water surface between waves, and churning clouds of sand in the water beyond the surf zone.
